I added support for the mate desktop in this plugin in v1.1.13, so maybe you need to upgrade.

Rather than upgrading you can also just replace /usr/share/gmusicbrowser/plugins/gnome_mmkeys.pm by the one from git : https://raw.githubusercontent.com/squentin/gmusicbrowser/master/plugins/gnome_mmkeys.pm

Also you can configure the keys manually to launch these commands :
gmusicbrowser -cmd NextSong
gmusicbrowser -cmd PrevSong
gmusicbrowser -cmd PlayPause
gmusicbrowser -cmd Stop

thanks for the reply

bear with me
I'd rather not get ahead of the Mageia repository, I'm on version Gmusic 1.1.1
which leaves setting a custom set of shortcuts
How would I do such a thing :D

volume works ok
ctrl up=increase volume
ctrl down=decrease volume

on most players I use
I use F9=play/pause
pause/break=next
ctrl left=previous
ctrl right=shuffle mode

sorry for not replying sooner
I hope you mean 1.1.10 not 1.1.1 which is awfully old. Even 1.1.10 is rather old, upgrading gmb is not that hard, you can just replace the files. You can also just run the new version without installing it, though the format of the gmbrc file may have changed which mean you can't go back.
Anyway, configuring your keys depend on your window manager/desktop, so I can't really help you, especially without knowing which one you use.

For shuffle mode, you'll want this command :
gmusicbrowser -cmd ToggleRandom

Solved
Mageia 5 has GmusicBrowser 1.1.13
which has support for Mate media keys
