Had a look at your suggestions and found that when tagging "appears" to fail, nothing is written to the terminal, however, the time-stamp is updated. GMB doesn't give any indication in the GUI that the tag has been changed until I tell it to re-read the tag.

In a nutshell the tags in flac files are being written but most of the time the library isn't reflecting the changes until the tags are re-read.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and my music is located on a NAS device which is mounted in the default Ubuntu music folder. I am using Gmusicrowser 1.1.9.

When I do any tag related tasks in Gmusicbrowser I literally have to them do them twice every time. I have tried leaving more time after the edit but it simply doesn't write anything to the tag.

P.S. Been playing around some more and it seems the problem doesn't occur with MP3 files only with my FLACs.
